Mel's Staff ProfileComment
Name? Melissa Saxton
Where are you from? I am Australian, but spent my high school years in Abu Dhabi, which is in the Middle East. I guess I see myself as a bit of a nomad.
Nicknames? Mel, Mellie, Smell
Family? My family is very spread out. My parents are still in the Middle East and I have four older brothers, one who lives in Sydney, one who lives in outback Western Australia and two who live in the UK.
Favourite Teen Ranch Activity? It’s a tie between Horses and Giant Swing.
Favourite Teen Ranch Meal? Tacos and cookies and cream ice-cream
Favourite thing to do in spare time? I love spending time with my dog, Archie, and catching up with friends.
Favourite season? Spring
How long have you been working at Teen Ranch? I have been here since the beginning of February.
And why did you want to work at Teen Ranch? I wanted to work somewhere that had God as the focus and where I would get to work with youth. Teen Ranch not only offers that, but it is a big family that supports each other and the wider community. I love getting to spend my day outside and to get to do lots of different activities.
When did you first start thinking about God? I have always known about God, through family and school, but I did not fully understand what it meant to be in a relationship with Him.
What made you want to follow Jesus? It was when I had just moved to the Middle East, and found myself alone and completely out of my depth. I decided to read my bible and realised that I really wasn’t alone. I made a choice to have a personal relationship with Jesus and to live a life that would glorify and honour Him.
What does your relationship with God look like on a day-to-day level? I am blessed that I live at Teen Ranch and have the opportunity to live in a community of godly men and women. I start my day with prayer and throughout the day I will pray short prayers, whether giving thanks or for moments that are really challenging me, I feel it is important to continually think and talk to God. I always end my day by reading my bible and reading devotionals or listening to talks. It is my way of settling my mind and growing in my relationship with God.
What would your advice be to anyone who is thinking about / has just started following Jesus? Get in contact with a youth group or church. It is really hard going it alone and having the support of a youth group will also provide the opportunity to ask those tough questions. If you don’t get answers to your questions keep asking, even send your questions to us, we would love to help. Reading the Bible is also important. If you don’t know where to start, try one of the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John).
What are your hopes for the future? I have loved being at Teen Ranch so hopefully will be here for a while. I trust the God has my life under control and where ever He wants me I will go. I hope one day to be married and to have a family, but that is in God’s hands and in His timing.
