    This week at the Ranch we’ve had the pleasure of hosting the Watoto Children’s Choir. The choir travels internationally to help raise an understanding of the plight of Africa's orphans. Watoto's performances are a soulful blend of native African rhythms, contemporary gospel music and ethnic dance.

    I don’t think I’ve ever met such joyful children before. Not just happy, but pure joy. As soon as they hopped off the bus, they had huge smiles on their faces, and stuck out their hands and they wanted to know my name and tell me theirs. I started to think about how and why these kids (who have lost one or both parents), are so joyful. What’s the source? It really comes down to one thing. One person. Jesus Christ. These kids know the love of God. Their identity is simply living as a child of God. These kids are so grateful for everything, from their salvation in Christ right through to just being able to share in a meal together.

    In Philippians, Paul tells us how we can access that same joy. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6) The key phrase to understand is ‘with thanksgiving’. To be thankful for all that God provides, from all the little things like catching the train on time to maybe getting into your top uni preference.

    Paul goes on to say “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:11-13) Being thankful is a learned quality. It’s not something inherently natural within us, like Paul we need to learn how to be thankful.

    What in your life do you have to be thankful for today? Some days you might struggle to find something to be thankful for. Other days there might be plenty of things. I want to encourage you to reflect on your day and find those things to be thankful for. Can I encourage you to go one step further and thank the Maker for them?
