• Do Pets Go To Heaven?

Throughout my childhood, we had a few different pets, guinea pigs to rabbits to no doubt my favourite and long lasting – our precious Golden Retriever x Labrador, Milo. I’m sure he thought of himself as a brother, the youngest sibling, a human but in dog form. You might have a similar experience with a pet dog, cat, bird, etc – whatever your pet might be, I’m sure you’ve wondered whether or not you’ll see your pet in heaven.

The Bible is completely silent on this issue. It neither confirms or denies pets going to heaven. Having said this, we can still draw some conclusions from what the Bible does actually say about animals.

    1. God created everything – including animals – for His pleasure and His glory. Revelation 4:11 says:

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for your created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

From humans to animals to inanimate objects like the sun, the stars, the trees, they all praise God. Now we know they don’t all praise God the same way, how can a tree glorify God the way humans can? But they carry out the role God planned for them, and through that, they glorify their Creator.

    2. Although all of God’s creation is for His glory and pleasure, human beings alone were created in His image. Animals were made from the same dust as humans, with the same breath of life in them as we do, but God made men and women in His own image and entrusted us with the responsibility of protecting, supervising and enjoying the rest of His creation (Genesis 1:24-31).

    3. Because humans can reason, we are able to make intelligent and moral decisions, animals cannot. God didn’t create animals with the power to make choices of right and wrong or to accept salvation – the good news of Jesus. Jesus died to “save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). In order for one to be saved, one has to believe in Jesus. The famous verse of John 3:16 declares this. Animals cannot practise a saving faith in Jesus.

    4. God’s original creation has been broken and decayed through sin, it will be restored as it was beginning. Even though our sin has destroyed nature and ourselves, God will restore both. Just as animals were a part of God’s untainted, original creation, so they will be apart of the new, restored world and life, in heaven.

What we have to keep in mind is that God has a plan, and his ways and thoughts are far above ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). We can’t expect God to give us exactly want we want or what we can understand. God may allow our pets to be with us heaven. Or He might give us new pets in heaven. We have to trust in God and His plans. We may not know all the details of what God is preparing for us in heaven, but we do know it will be far better than anything we can imagine.

“Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.” (Isaiah 65:17)

Love your pets, enjoy them as God created them to be enjoyed. Trust that God is good and He will work all things together for your good.
